Hello, i wanted to make this topic over a week ago but technical difficulties kept getting in the way of it as well as generally lacking time on every front.
First and foremost we officially stopped the guilded.gg server. It is just forgotten history now. Outside of the forum we now in total have 3 different communication platforms. There is the old unloze discord, the new unloze discord and the matrix server. This announcement will mostly elaborate on the new discord server and matrix server. The new discord server was launched in November 2023 and we intentionally kept silent about it launching.
The old discord server heavily suffered from a lack of representation of active CSS players. You can almost on a single hand count the discord users in the old discord server who are also actively playing ze, mg or zr.
Therefore we silently launched the new discord server to get a concentrated group of people with who we are able to focus on meaningful discussions regarding the servers and gamemodes. The old discord server barely ever allowed to have focused discussions regarding CSS in the public as it really often would get derailed by regulars. The issue has been solved with the new discord server. However we are obviously aware that eventually as time moves on the new discord server too will be filled with inactive people who dont represent the currently active CSS playerbase. Due to this we saw ourselves forced to also cut very strictly the type of content that is available on the new discord. The new discord almost exclusively has the purpose to discuss ZE, MG and ZR and a bit mapping. That means in fact that not much socializing happens over there. We also generally try to enforce a standard level for communication over there. If we think that some people add too much pointless noise to the channels we quickly remove them from that discord server.
The old discord server still serves the purpose to be the place where we in general talk about anything which 98% of the time are not the css servers. If you are new you can still join the old unloze discord server however you should understand the chance of you getting accepted into the actual channels is very low. By far the majority of new people are stuck in the introduction channel and never get to leave it. The new discord server on the other hand has no gatekeeping and is instead directly accessible for everybody.
The new discord server is heavily moderated for the sake of keeping conversations productive and on topic about the game, due to this environment we dont need to add any gatekeeping to the new discord server.
The old discord server is mostly the opposite, the gatekeeping consists of that when you join you end up in the introduction channel, the bot will tell you that you need to associate your discord and steam account with an unloze forum account and even if you bother doing that then afterwards it will tell you that you need 200 hours activity in total before being allowed in. In reality its just a formality as majority of the people who we used to let into the discord server were discovered before they reached 200 hours. Once on the inside there is not much moderation going on.
We saw ourselves forced to apply this gatekeeping method on the old discord server after some new people with really bad intentions joined the discord who abused the discord report feature for getting several members banned when there in fact was no issues between those users involved as we are friends.
So generally the new discord server is accessible for everybody, its heavily moderated and its only focused on discussing css related topics where we try to enforce a certain standard for participation.
The old discord server is almost not accessible for anybody new (because everybody just is stuck in the introdution channel), there is not much moderation going on on the inside and its mostly just about socializing and talking to friends.
Since the new discord server now had some months to grow naturally with being advertised officially on the forum and on the ingame servers i think its time again to un-hide the old discord server. The old discord server will therefore be made visible again eventually both ingame and on the forum together with the new one. Both places serve their purpose and its only fair for everybody to know that both places exist. I use the new discord server for meaningful discussions about ZE and ZR meanwhile i still talk with the exact same crowd on the old discord server about daily life and random happenings.
malala Asked me since several months to install a matrix server for unloze. The advantage for it compared to discord is that its self hosted, so there is no report feature for people to abuse. The matrix server is directly linked to all the public channels of the old discord server. This basically means that if you are only part of the new discord server and want to participate in the socialising on unloze that actually only happens on the old discord server then you can now participate through our matrix server.
In overall i am very happy regarding the separated responsibilities of the new and old discord servers, i have talked more about the ZR server in two weeks than i did in the past 7 years. In the same way has Zombie escape also been able to be discussed more meaningful in public than its been in years on the old server. Hopefully one day Minigame will catch up too.
The matrix server should be a nice addition to help new players with being able to participate in the social aspects of unloze. Granted it is more difficult to install a matrix client and to join matrix spaces/rooms but i am fine with viewing that as a brain filter.
